Orbital Technical Solutions is honored to be recognized by the Association for Iron & Steel Technology

Orbital Technical Solutions (OTS), a sister company of Orbital Engineering, Inc. (Orbital) is honored to be recognized by the Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST) for our commitment to safety and pushing the boundaries of technology to enhance the industries inspection capabilities. AIST’s Crane Technology Committee presented OTS with the 2018 AIST Crane Innovator of the Year Award for a presentation entitled, ”The Use of Drones for Crane Runway Inspections”. This signifies our partnership with the Iron & Steel industry and our dedication to developing technology solutions aimed at reducing overall cost and protecting the industry’s most valuable asset……………its people.

During the ceremony, OTS demonstrated the capability of its Elios UAV showcasing the advantage of a collision-tolerant drone, designed for the inspection of tight industrial spaces.

Orbital Engineering, Inc. (Orbital) Receives the 2018 AIST Crane Innovator of the Year Award

Orbital Engineering, Inc. (Orbital) was recently informed by the AIST Cranes Technology Committee, that it has been selected as the recipient of the 2018 AIST Crane Innovator of the Year Award for its presentation entitled, “The Use of Drones for Crane Runway Inspections” at the 2017 Annual Crane Symposium in Pittsburgh, PA.    Orbital, through its sister company Orbital Technical Solutions (OTS), utilizes robotics, such as drones, as another “tool in our toolbelt” for its inspection services.  The use of robotics allows inspection work on assets like crane and crane runways to be completed in manner that limits exposure to safety hazards while achieving a more time sensitive evaluation of the asset.

Orbital Technical Solutions Completed a Successful UAV Flight Within a Large East Coast Refinery

Orbital Technical Solutions (OTS), a sister company of Orbital Engineering, Inc. (Orbital), just completed a successful UAV (drone) flight within a large east coast refinery. The mission was to collect high definition video and still photos during large vessel installation. The vessel was being lifted into place with a large crawler crane. The vessel installation, UAV flights and data collection were successful. OTS used a DJI Matrice 200 Industrial Quadcopter with a 20.8MP DJI X5S camera for high definition, wide-angle images and a 180X Zoom DJI Z30 camera for close-up views of the installation. The work required an extensive amount of safety precautions, FAA correspondence and planning including a detailed Job Hazard Analysis. Additionally, an FAA Part 107 wavier had to be filed to allow this flight to be completed within Class B airspace for an international airport.

Orbital Technical Solutions Presents at Las Vegas International Drone Conference and Exposition

Orbital Technical Solutions recently had the opportunity to present at the Las Vegas International Drone Conference and Exposition September 6-8, 2017.  Orbital’s own Rich Schutte spoke on utilizing and flying drones in hazardous and confined space environments to an audience of 70. Below is a recap of Rich’s presentation.

For centuries, the only way to inspect dangerous or confined areas was by having personnel enter these hazardous zones. Additionally, these inspections required plant shutdowns while inspectors rappelled into an area with full-face respirators on for hours. However, with advancements in technology, such as UAVs, this dangerous job can now be completed safely while operating a UAV.

Rich’s presentation provided an overview of flying UAVs in a hazardous and/or confined area. Attendees learned what is a hazardous/confined environment and UAV-specific challenges associated with each. The presentation also included case studies of heavy industrial inspections performed by both internal and external UAVs.

Additional Topics Rich touched on were:

  • Defining a hazardous/confined environment (such as gaseous, flammable or underground).
  • Explaining special UAV requirements for flights (such as non-GPS environment, lighting issues, brometric pressure issues, or magnetic interference).
  • An overview of inspection-based flights (blue print or structural plans, recording of landmarks, ID emergency landing areas, etc.)

Orbital Technical Solutions Appears at the AIST Vendor Fair

Orbital Technical Solutions displayed a booth at the Association for Iron and Technology Annual Vendor Fair in Indiana last month.  We showcased our engineering and drone inspection services.  We had many visitors from United States Steel to Arcelor Mittal. In the past we have completed numerous drone inspections for these types of companies and the steel industry continues to find new, innovative, more safe and efficient ways to complete their runway, crane, structural and many other inspections on these sites. 2017 Electric Power Conference

Ameren Corporation and Orbital Technical Solutions will be presenting at the 2017 Electric Power Conference on the use of new technology for internal inspections of electric power assets.Conference: April 10-13, 2017 — Exhibition: April 10-12, 2017

Conference: April 10-13, 2017 — Exhibition: April 10-12, 2017
McCormick Place West, Hall F1 — Chicago, IL

The technology to be presented will focus mainly on specialty drones such as spherical(caged) drones however other equipment developments will be discussed. Drones and other technology will allow for a safer and more efficient internal inspection of plant assets.  A flight demonstration can be completed during the session that will allow the audience to see a drone in process. The demonstration will show the audience the live feed from drone. After the flight is complete the data recorded from the drone flight can be analyzed/processed for review.
